Senate bans UK from sending prisoners back to Nigeria

The Senate on Tuesday, has placed a ban on the transfer of Nigerian citizens imprisoned in the United Kingdom to the country.
The Senate came to this resolution following a motion moved by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. titled “Urgent need to regularise the agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the government of the United Kingdom”.

Ekweremadu stated that it was an unfair trade for the UK to return prisoners to Nigeria when the country has no British prisoner in Nigerian prisons.
Senator James Manager held that the bill should be referred to the Committee on Judiciary and Foreign affairs for proper deliberation on the issue.

The Senate resolved to summon the attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami and the minister of interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau to explain what the federal government is doing to regularise the transfer of prisoners between the two countries.
